We all have those bad days.
We wake up one day and suddenly feel like we’re not good enough. We feel like not being good enough for our partner, our kids, career, or business.
This is perfectly normal. Even the most optimistic people I know experience bouts of self-doubt every now and then. But one thing I found interesting is that they have these little tricks to help them deal with the feeling.
- Listing down all accomplishments
When self-doubt rears its ugly head again, go and grab a sheet of paper (or open a new .doc file). Then without passing any form of judgment, list down all accomplishments you had in your life. This doesn’t have to be something grand. It can be as simple as learning to ride a bike in your 20s or successfully baking a cake after several tries.
Don’t stress yourself out. If something feels like an accomplishment to you, list it down.
Once you’re done, go over your list and read them aloud (or go to a private place to do it). I’ve done this in several occasions and it’s amazing how quickly it makes me feel good about myself.
- Ask your closest friends of what make you ‘click’
Call three of your best friends and ask them of why they think you click. You may be surprised to find out that it’s the little things you do that matters a lot to them. Give this a try. You don’t have anything to lose other than a change in perception and mood.
- Look at how far you’ve gone
Sometimes it’s the overwhelming feeling that makes us doubt ourselves. So take time to pause and look at things objectively. When you’re doing a project, look at your accomplishments and recognize how far you’ve gone. If you’re feeling not good enough in your relationships, look back and recognize all the challenges you’ve been through and take pride in your role in it. You’ll be amazed how a simple trick can shift your focus – from doubt to action.
- Watch a motivational video
There are tons of them online! One of my favorites is this video of Kyle Maynard. Whenever I’m tackling a huge project and feel like I’m not good enough for it, I watch this clip and boom! It feels like I’m re-energized and have gained new strength.
- Go for a walk or run
It’s no longer a secret that working out can boost your endorphin level (also known as the feel-good hormone). So, go ahead and break a sweat!
Walking, running, or any other physical activity won’t only make you feel good but will also help clear your mind and keeps the creative juices flowing.
Self-doubt is not totally a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s a good sign telling us that we’re stepping beyond our comfort zone. So, the next time you feel like you’re not good enough, recognize the feeling but don’t let it paralyze you from doing something great.
